Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)

Christopher Cross

“Arthur’s Song (Best That You Can Do)” was the main theme song for the 1981 Dudley Moore film Arthur. Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager chose Cross to sing it “because the year before he’d won five Grammys”. Peter Allen also has a song credit because he had written the line “When you get caught between the moon and New York City” a few years earlier, and Sager asked him to use it.

The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1981, and also topped the Adult Contemporary chart. It also hit #1 in Norway and reached the top 10 in Switzerland and New Zealand. It was certified Gold by the RIAA. “Arthur’s Song” won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
