This final rap battle is the climactic point of the film. Papa Doc wins the coin toss and elects to “let that bitch go first.” Aware that Doc has a lot of potential material about him, Rabbit adopts the “stealing thunder” technique, which involves revealing the negative facts/information about yourself or a situation before it is mentioned by the opponent or other individuals. For example- in courtrooms, if the defendant admits the negative evidence against themselves FIRST, before the prosecutor gets the chance to do so, it significantly reduces the probability that the defendant would be viewed unfavorably.

If you’re admitting the unfavorable details openly, it won’t seem as if you’re trying to cover up and hide something.

Negative information coming from YOUR mouth is not anywhere as crippling than it is coming from your challenger-

While Rabbit embraces his own past, he reveals Doc’s as well, revealing that not everything is how it seems.

This tactic not only intensifies your credibility, but it also takes the sting out of the negative information itself. Therefore, making the facts/information not even seem so bad (since you’re willing to admit it).
