“Bad Kind of Butterflies” sees Camila confess that despite being in a happy relationship, there’s someone else stuck in her head.

The bass-heavy track appears to narrate the moment when Camila and Matthew Hussey ended their relationship, after dating for over a year. The break-up was spurred by Camila’s feelings for collaborator Shawn Mendes, with the pair becoming a couple not long after.

At her Los Angeles pop-up on December 6, 2019, Camila confessed that she hasn’t listened to the track since she recorded it:

It takes me back to a time when I was always feeling anxious. Just thinking about writing [the song] makes me want to throw up.
