When introducing this song at the Kennedy Center, Kiah said: “This is another Vera Hall song, another one that I co-wrote. This was one opportunity where, for some reason I was able to fit "high heels” and “patrón” in a verse, in a song. I’m not even 100% sure how it came to me but it just seemed right, and it fits with the context."

Alan Lomax recorded Vera Hall’s rendition of this song in 1940. Hall’s verses narrate the story of an enslaved person who died in a chain gang.
