Admit Defeat

Admit Defeat

Bastille

This song premiered live on 29 November 2019 during the “Doom Days Club Nights” at Warwick Arts Centre. Originally, it was planned for the normal-length album Doom Days, but didn’t make it to the final cut of the album.

Following the narrative nature of the album, the song describes admitting defeat on the original notion that he and the woman from “Another Place” would permanently part ways in the morning. Instead, he describes the growing attraction and retreat he finds in her.

In December 2019 following the release of Doom Days: This Got Out of Hand!, Smith had a chance to sit down and explain some of the new tracks on the album on his social media, each in under 30 seconds. About this track, he explained:

Admit Defeat … opens the 2nd half of the album. It’s like a kind of victory call. We wanted to play something that felt like a superhero theme song with this distorted, electronic brass sound. It’s like a party song. Kyle did some production on the track, and he’s an amazing producer, so that’s really fun to have him involved on that side of things. It’s about resigning yourself to not being able to stop thinking about somebody to the night and just losing yourself to the evening. It doesn’t quite fit on the album thematically, but it’s a lot of people in the band’s favourite song, so it’s wicked [that we were able to release it on the extended album.]
