“9th Configuration” is the third song in the album Q36, by American new wave and power pop band The Rentals.

The song borrows its name from the movie The Ninth Configuration, and the lyrics talk about the plot of the film.

The basic plot is that the protagonist is a former member of a United States Marine Corps special unit, and arrives at a castle that serves as an insane asylum (because he is a doctor) and needs to acclimate himself to the patients' conditions, and meets a former astronaut, sent to the asylum for having a mental breakdown and aborting a moon launch.
