With her first single for 2020, the British artist Bree Runway doesn’t only craft a quick and energetic track that fuses many genres, with a focus on hip-hop: she also creates an impressive and heartfelt celebration of the legacy of one of her (probably) favourite artists: the legendary Virginia-based rapper, producer and singer-songwriter Missy Elliott, mainly remembered for her extravagant and futuristic style, in rap as well as in her video-clips.

In fact, Bree’s song seems to be full of references to Missy’s incredible career: first of all, the intro to the track, which contains a lush guitar solo and some particular effects, resembles the one included in “Tempo,” a 2019 song by Lizzo that featured Missy for a guest verse.

The instrumental, then, is divided in two distinct sections for the rest of the track: on the chorus, some strange synth progressions, similar to 8-bit video-games in their sound, provide the backing for Bree’s vocals; during the verses, it shifts to a hard-dance beat, that also samples Lyn Collins“Think (About It)”.

On the top of this intense instrumental, Bree might keep paying homage to Missy by interpolating her flows: the most similar songs, in this case, seem to be “Work It” (that has a similar beat, as well) and “Get Ur Freak On”.

While the bridge puts Bree’s vocal abilities in evidence (and might remind of Missy’s singing skills, as well), some ad-libs could remind of Missy’s backing vocals on tracks such as “Lick Shots”.

Finally, the music video is the most evident tribute, as some scenes could have been inspired by the absurd and funny clips for songs like “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” and “One Minute Man”.
