Interpolating a line from Common’s “I Used To Love H.E.R.,” Kanye uses extended metaphor to describe his feelings for Chicago, his home, by comparing it to a lost girlfriend.

Ye had these lines kicking around for a while: they originally appeared on his debut mixtape Get Well Soon.. (which was made up of material recorded before The College Dropout) in a song called “Home.”

For “Homecoming,” he replaced that song’s soul sample with a looped piano, switched out the John Legend hook for a different one from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, and rerecorded his original verse as two separate verses.
