“Re:Definition” serves as a Part 2 to the Black Star album’s first single “Definition.” “Definition” was released in August 1998 and “Re:Definition” was later released as a promo single. The duo’s debut video for “Definition” featured a piece of “Re:Definition” at the end Mos and Kweli tear up this Hi-Tek beat while talking about everything from black liberation to Menudo.

Producer Hi-Tek said the following about the track:

I like the way I did the snares and the kicks [on the original], but it wasn’t enough. Me being Hi-Tek, I wanted to do something real technical, which was flip the beat and transform it into something totally original—and that’s where ‘Re: Definition’ came from. I told Mos, ‘Lemme break it down and change the whole beat.’ He was like, ‘Do it!’ When I came up with it, it was me and Mos at like four, five in the morning.
