These Foolish Things

These Foolish Things

Jack Strachey

This song, in which the singer lists banal details of everyday life that remind him of a lost love, was not a success when initially published in 1935, and the publisher let lyricist Eric Maschwitz have the copyright for nothing. The song then skyrocketed in popularity the following year, when Leslie “Hutch” Hutchinson recorded it. It has since received numerous other performances, and Maschwitz reaped all the financial benefits.
