When 20th Century Fox made a filmed adaptation of Françoise Sagan’s novel A Certain Smile, Fain and Paul Francis Webster were commissioned to write a song with that title for the film. The song was sung by Johnny Mathis, who appeared in the film as himself. The song was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song, and is much better known than the film that inspired it.
