BROKEN NEEDLE

BROKEN NEEDLE

Marilyn Manson

This is a play on “Snow White” tale by Brothers Grimm.

Verses tell a story of princess eating an apple and falling asleep for a century what can be recognized as plot of “Snow White” where the girl was tricked to eat a poisoned apple and, as people thought, die. But she was saved by her friends, dwarves, who occassionally dropped her coffin and made the piece of apple jump out of her throat, thus resurrecting her.

Manson replaces the evil stepmother in this plot with himself, a narrator, telling princess the truth from the very beginning. Thus, though she is awared, the story will go on as it’s supposed to, so Manson, despite being a broken needle in the record player, still makes the record play from alpha to omega. He questions the expediency of doing this (“All of these lies are not worth fighting for”) but does it like a machine.

Later in the outro, he compares his struggles to the result of his actions and finally denies to go on what can be heard in line “I’ll never ever play you again”. This decision comes not only by his suffering, but also because the tales played by record player are lies and he can’t see the point in setting them over and over again.

This song closes the album with bitter taste of disappointment, which on the other side can be defined as finally seeing the truth and acting the right way. Manson is done with tales, the needle is finally broken and record player is doomed to stay silent forevermore.

Leaving the record player metaphor, it might be a story of Manson’s relationship with some person or even with entire humanity itself. He kept doing what he was supposed to for a long time but then saw it was bringing zero result, that’s why he decided to leave and finally breathe free. He either leaves the person alone in their fictional silly world or stops listening to what society says, and now it’s not simple flaming protest for protest but a weighted decision of an adult man getting old. Now that he has seen almost everything, he can be sure there are no fairy tales, and no record player can save us from reality. He throws the delusions away and leaves to heal his wounds, to not be broken ever again.
