“Better | Mamba Forever” is a tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, released on what would have been his 42nd birthday, August 23, 2020. The commercial features spoken word poetry by Kendrick Lamar, backdropped by a rendition of Beethoven’s “Piano Sonata No. 14,” otherwise known as “Moonlight Sonata.”

Bryant famously learned to play the 19th century composition by ear, in the wake of his two-year separation from Vanessa Bryant. In January 2013, around the time of their reconciliation, he shared an image of himself behind a grand piano on Twitter with the following caption:

Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata calms me down when I reach my breaking point #relaxandfocus

The Nike tribute combines highlights from Kobe’s basketball career with various depictions of athletes, musicians, members of Bryant’s family—including his daughter, Gianna, who also passed away in the January 26 Calabasas helicopter crash—as well as Black Lives Matter protesters. Lamar and Bryant had a friendly relationship, dating back to a November 2017 joint interview with Jinx from Complex, where they discussed success, motivation, and the similarities between their careers.
