Lowkey as Hell

Lowkey as Hell

Waterparks

Awsten Knight leaked this song on September 17, 2020, at the end of an Instagram live stream. He played the leak while cutting the green parts of his own hair off, which fans speculated to be symbolism that marks the end of the FANDOM era. When asked in an interview if it marked the end of the era or the start of the next one, Awsten replied that “It’s kind of both. It feels like we’re kind of in purgatory right now. Being able to just cut all my f*cking hair off… feels like a reset to me, if anything.”

In the days following the leak, Knight continued to make tweets on both his personal Twitter and the official Waterparks twitter which seemed to be teasing the song. On September 20th, the official Waterparks account tweeted that if fans could get zero retweets, Lowkey As Hell would be released that day– a similar challenge to the 20,000 retweets one that led to the release of the demo album in January of the same year.

Unfortunately, it did not take long for the tweet to be retweeted, and only a minute later, a second tweet was made stating that the challenge had been failed and that Lowkey As Hell would not be released that day.

On September 23rd, Awsten tweeted out the song’s upcoming release date, and on September 25th at midnight the song was officially released. In an interview posted on kerrang.com, he states that the reason for the song’s release is that “right now, I just want to give people a song– that’s pretty much where I’m at.”
