Aimee Mann’s “Avalanche” is a cover of the Leonard Cohen composition of the same name. The haunting folk ballad was commissioned to serve as the theme to HBO’s I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, a docuseries based on the life of Mann’s friend, the late Michelle McNamara and the book of the same name about her quest to discover the identity of the Golden State Killer. Of the song, Mann said:

The producers wanted that Leonard Cohen song and I don’t know this for a fact, but I did get the sense that because I was friends with Michelle, they wanted me to be the one to sing the opening song.”
