The opener to Echoes of Silence is The Weeknd’s rendition of Michael Jackson’s classic, “Dirty Diana”, but with an even darker vibe.

Like the original song, Abel experiences the struggles of dealing with groupie love, especially when he’s supposed to already have something going with a girl from the previous projects in the Trilogy.

The Weeknd spoke with L.A. Times about how “Dirty Diana” influenced his artistry:

“Dirty Diana” is my favorite song of all time, it is literally my No. 1. It takes all these genres and it puts it into one song — rock, experimental, hip-hop, R&B. It’s why I wanted to write these dope songs.

In select live performances involving this track, The Weeknd performed a version merging this song with Beauty Behind the Madness single “In the Night.”
