Lindsay previewed a demo version of “Back to Me” on Instagram in September 2019. The demo features an intro before the first verse, songwriter ALMA doing back vocals, along with some other production differences.

The lyric “I know I think too much” is also switched to “I know I drink too much” in the final single version. During a Beats 1 interview in April 2020, Lindsay explained being fearful about people’s reactions to that line, as she had originally changed it to “I know I think too much” because the other wasn’t reflective of how she felt about her life at the time. However, after talking with her brother who lives in Los Angeles, she felt it would get more people’s attention and understanding to keep “I know I drink too much” for the official release.
