rubberband

Tate McRae

In “rubberband,“ Tate addresses her ex with a regretful tone, taking the blame for ruining their relationship. To cope with anxiety, people often use rubberbands to break the downward spiral and snap back into reality. Tate uses the same concept when it comes to remembering how she broke her relationship.

The song utilizes a bass and synthetic piano to create a nostalgic atmosphere, one that portrays a hopeless Tate as she copes with the hardships of moving on. Tate employs a rhyme scheme using the “s” sound throughout the song, most notably in the chorus. She also uses repetition in the post-chorus and outro, with ad-libs further displaying her inability and desperation when it comes to handling this breakup.

The music video depicts two versions of Tate. A dark Tate, still in the immediate post breakup phase. On the other end, light Tate, in a better place after some time following the breakup. Similar to a “rubberband,” Tate’s dancing snaps her back to reality after she begins to regress back into self blame, portrayed as parts of her fading. Although still struggling with it, dancing helps her to cope with the breakup and to begin moving on.

One interesting point to note is that Tate was a dancer way before she became a singer, which is demonstrated in full through her interpretive dance throughout the music video.
