“Cheerleader” was a 2012 reggae fusion song by Reggae/Soul artist OMI. It was popular in OMI’s native Jamaica and parts of Hawaii, but failed to reach a global audience until German producer Felix Jaehn remixed it in May 2014. The remix charted in Sweden, Germany, and Italy, and took on a new life when it was released in the U.K. in April 2015 and reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart and Billboard Hot 100.
OMI spoke to Jimmy Fallon about the background and meaning of the song on his show:
It was about seven years ago; I was in a taxi developing my catalogue at an underground studio and I was heading to that studio. I had the melody in my head early that morning and it was so catchy, you know? I used to love writing from a metaphoric standpoint – that was like my thing – that’s how I came up with the metaphor ‘Cheerleader,’ you know, that support system.
Omi revealed in a Billboard interview that he hasn’t found his cheerleader – the last time he had a serious girlfriend was about 8 years ago.
