It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay

Whitney Houston

It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay is the third single of off Whitney Houston’s fourth studio album My Love Is Your Love (1998).

In this song produced by Rodney Jerkins, Houston continues to prove that she can hang with the kids on the street. The diva is placed at the center of a jittery funk beat that suits the tension of the lyrics. Houston plays the emancipated woman to the hilt here, snarling through the song’s “I’m gonna make it anyway” message with a white-knuckled gusto that she hadn’t displayed in ages.

Loyalists yearning for one of the singer’s patented power ballads will be disappointed at first, though they will likely find solace in Jerkins' Smooth remix, which reinvents the tune as a languid jeep cruiser. Everyone else, however, should find this single as appealing and refreshing as it is timely and competitive.

The song peaked at #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart on July 3, 1999. The single also peaked at #1 on Billboard‍'s Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, #7 on the top 100 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, and was certified Platinum by the RIAA.

It also reached #3 in Canada and the United Kingdom — in March 1999 — where it stayed in the chart for 15 weeks, being a hugely popular radio hit in that country.
