Originally debuted on Triple J (an Australian radio station), America’s Cup was released as the second single for Pond’s ninth album, 9. Nick Allbrook said in a radio interview that the song is about the gentrification of his home state (Western Australia) and large businesses pushing small businesses out of areas.

The America’s Cup, hosted in Fremantle, Perth in 1987, played a significant part in this gentrification. Aspects of the Cup itself are present in the music video, including the safety gear used in the modern day cup and the Auld Mug.
