Call Me Cruella

Call Me Cruella

Florence + the Machine

“Call Me Cruella” is a song created for the 2021 Disney movie Cruella. The track seems to pick up where the original film’s title song, Cruella De Vil, left off, with the intro following a similar rhyme scheme.

Regarding the song’s sound, producer Nicholas Britell stated in a May 2021 interview with Billboard,

With both this song and the Cruella score itself, the goal was to really embrace the raw rock aesthetic of ‘60s and '70s London. We recorded everything using all vintage gear and analog tape at Abbey Road and AIR Studios in London, melding orchestral elements with electric guitars and basses, organs, keyboards, and drums.

Lead singer Florence Welch said in a May 2021 interview with NME this song was the fulfillment of her childhood dream:

Some of the first songs I ever learned how to sing were Disney songs… And the villains often got the best numbers.

“Call Me Cruella” was first teased in the film’s trailer, released May 10th. The song marks the second time Florence + the Machine writes a song for a villain, the first being “Breath of Life”, written for Queen Ravenna from Snow White and the Huntsman (2012).
