“could cry just thinkin about you” was originally a song by Troye Sivan, released from his extended play, In a Dream, on August 21, 2020, at only fifty-two seconds long. On June 25th, 2021, Sivan premiered additional lyrics for the song in a live performance for GrubHub.

On July 8, 2021, it was revealed Sivan would be releasing a full version of the song at a total of two minutes and thirty eight seconds, which will include additional lyrics.
