Illustrating a brand new, different side of Alessia Cara, “Shapeshifter” is cloaked in intricate, ‘sharp’ lyrics and, as she puts it, ‘dramatic’ production. It is the first song she wrote for the album. The song experiments with its identity, traveling roads not taken, and lets it known that it is bold.

Alessia stated in a post across all social media that

There’s “Shapeshifter,” which represents the more sophisticated and fiery parts of the album. I had to experience different forms of pain to regain my footing and this song feels unwavering, despite it not being about the happiest of things (got my feelings hurt whatever).

She had the opportunity to collaborate with Salaam Remi, producer of legendary singer-songwriter, and idol to Alessia, Amy Winehouse. As one of two promotional singles released on July 15, 2021, the track explores the theme of duality.
