You’ll Understand When You’re Older

Lovejoy

“You’ll Understand When You’re Older” is the fifth song on Lovejoy’s second EP, Pebble Brain.

The song’s main theme is the pressure that restaurant waiters in the UK felt during the COVID-19 pandemic. The lyrics also seem to obliquely refer to one of the narrator’s female co-workers suffering from the effects of an abusive relationship.

Wilbur said in a stream on Oct. 19, 2021, that this is “a song about a minister of parliament.” The song is likely based off of Matt Hancock, an MP and former Health Secretary who resigned from his cabinet position for breaking social distancing guidelines by kissing an aide, Gina Coladangelo. Drummer Mark Boardman shared a photo of samples and demos that Lovejoy used while writing “Pebble Brain” and one of the files is called “LJ Hancock samples,” implying a song is based off of Hancock.

Wilbur also added an outro that was cut from the released album.
