The first single to be released from KICK ii, “Born Yesterday” flips a 2013 Sia demo track about love, infidelity, and internal struggle, updated with Arca’s signature eerie synths and a pulsating dance beat.

The original demo of the song was rumored to be pitched to Katy Perry for her album Prism, but was ultimately rejected and left unused until it fell into Arca’s hands. In Zane Lowe’s New Music Daily show for Apple Music, Arca explained her reason for choosing the demo and including a piano melody she had played since she was a child:

I always loved that melody, but I never had the right opportunity to invoke it; it seemed almost too personal, too emotional. When I heard the lyrics, I was going through a situation in Sia’s lyrics that resonated with me. It seemed like the first time that I could allow myself to do that.
