Garrick Duckler and Elliott Smith (then credited as Elliott Stillwater-Rotter) would release The Greenhouse as A Murder Of Crows during their time in high school. The final track on the album, “3”, is the earliest known version of the song that would eventually be released as King’s Crossing on the posthumous From a Basement on the Hill.

There are three known studio recordings of the song, two of which have been officially released.
- 1988: A Murder of Crows – 3
- 2000: Elliott Smith – unreleased solo acoustic demo
- 2004: Elliott Smith – King’s Crossing (From a Basement on the Hill)

Additionally, it is known that the song has at least five different iterations of lyrics:
- 1988: A Murder of Crows – 3
- Versions written in lyric sheets provided by William Todd Schultz
- Version written on lyric sheet seen in Heaven Adores You
- 2000: Version performed in concert 5/9/00
- 2004: Elliott Smith – King’s Crossing (From a Basement on the Hill)
