“All That” is the second single from Carly Rae Jepsen’s third studio album, E•MO•TION. It’s a musical departure from her lead single, “I Really Like You”. While the first song had lighter production and was about an adolescent crush on someone, “All That” is inspired by the 1980s both in the production and the subject matter of searching for a deep, steady relationship.

One of co-producer Ariel Rechtshaid’s biggest contributions to the song was speeding it up. As Jepsen told Complex, the song was originally three or four BPMs slower. “Ariel was like, ‘Guys, I really like what you’re doing with this slow jam, but I find myself looking at people in the room to be like, “When’s the next beat gonna happen?”’ So he helped us to make it appropriately slow.”

Citing her personal taste as a motivator to expand her sound, Carly explained her choice of Devonté “Dev” Hynes as co-producer:

I’d be like, “I love that Solange song. Who did that? Oh, Dev Hynes did that,” and so I’d email him.
