This song finds her singing of mutual infidelity. She told the Daily Mail:

I took my feelings and wrote about them. Whether the breakup was traumatic or not is nobody’s business.

The breakthrough for this song was when Jones came up with the lyric that gave the song its title – Four Broken Hearts.

We came up with that line, and I remember thinking, ‘Oh yeah, of course!’ It’s like when you’re writing, you’re always chasing something that will draw the listener in and make them go ‘Oh!’. So that was kind of the moment for that song.
