“Jigsaw” is the third pre-release single off of Japanese-American singer, Conan Gray’s sophomore album, Superache.

“Jigsaw” follows the pop-ballad style that is used in most of Conan’s songs, mixed in with rock elements played during the chorus and further on in the song. The song is lyrically about changing yourself into someone you aren’t in order to fit the interest of your crush/lover and do anything for them.

The term “jigsaw” is used in this song to showed that you jumbled and something that isn’t in it’s normal state. A jigsaw (usually known as a jigsaw puzzle) is a mixed-up puzzle that is formed together in small pieces with distinctive edges that interconnect with each other. This relates to the subject matter in the song as it represents how Conan is unrecognizable to his own self from trying to please another person.

Some theories point to the fact that this song may be about Conan’s parents and the rough relationship they had when he was younger. In the first verse, Conan drops these lines saying,

Then I’d be more like my sister
Say, “Thank you Ma'am and Mister”
To you,

These lyrics could point to the fact that Conan must be referring to two people who go by ma'am and mister. Later on in the song, Conan then says this

If I made you like me, would I even like myself?
Pointin' out all my flaws doesn’t help

In a parent-to-child relationship, usually, the parent will be the one to criticize and make judgments on the other. Not to mention the fact that Conan created this song as a diary entry and had no intention of releasing it, showing how personal this song is compared to the others he’s released which can lead to the conclusion that this song isn’t just another heartbreak song. But on December 5, 2021, the day of his birthday, he decided to share a snippet of the song on his secret TikTok account.
