“Fake” was the lead single from Alexander O'Neal’s sophomore album Hearsay. Jimmy Jam lauded Alexander’s versatility as a vocalist being able to both caress a tender ballad and yet rise to the challenge of a funky song like “Fake.” The song went #1 on the R&B charts that year and set the tone for the rest of the album’s chart success. A black-and-white music video clip was filmed for the song.
