In “what would you do?”, Tate McRae questions her partner about their possible reaction to her leaving them. In a TikTok, where McRae broke down her debut album, she explained; “Uh, "what would you do” is basically a huge F.U. song. If I never came back into your life, I hope you would cry."

It was released on May 13, 2022 as the fourth single off McRae’s debut album, with a music video released a week later. McRae used TikTok to tease the song multiple times, starting February 28th.
