‘Silent Running’ is the fifth and final single from the album ‘Cracker Island’. The song features Adeleye Omotayo, who was a backing vocalist for the late Amy Winehouse, as well as a member of the Gorillaz live band backing singers.

This song is claimed to be the first to be recorded out of all of the songs.

Much like other songs on the album, it explores themes of social media and addiction – how one can fade into the chaos of the internet. ‘Silent Running’ is a nautical term which refers to when submarines travel as quietly as possible as to be undetectable.

The song first premiered alongside ‘Cracker Island’ live at Montevideo – Uruguay on the 28th of April 2022 at the beginning of their South American tour. However, the song was not played since and was released 8 months later.

Damon Albarn had this to say about the song;

“[The track channels] that sort of mesmerizing dreamlike state you get in when you’re just following some train of thought.”
