Be Careful With Yourself

Be Careful With Yourself

Julia Jacklin

“Be Careful With Yourself” infuses indie rock and grit in order to create a song that asks her loved one to take care of themselves better, to keep them in Jacklin’s life. The song continues with themes of religious shame and loss being imbued in sex and love that are shown throughout the album, paralleling “Too In Love To Die” with the idea that love is often paired with the fear of losing them. Each verse finds a new example as to how her loved one could extend their life, from safe driving to saving money. Jacklin ends the song by singing “Now that I know there’s nobody coming to save us,” an existentialist perspective on how they can only save themselves which is why she asks them to take care of themself. Therefore, this song is not only a declaration of love and care but of moving away from religious doctrine, knowing they have full control over their lives.
