Retrospect for Life

Retrospect for Life

Common (Ft. Lauryn Hill)

“Retrospect For Life” was released as the lead single to Common’s third album, One Day It’ll All Make Sense. The song deals with the conflict of abortion and the feelings that come with either choice. Producer No I.D. revealed some background information about the song:

The funniest thing is, the song was a true story. It was weird because when the girl (who it was about) heard it, she spazzed out about it.

Lauryn Hill provides vocals for the chorus, which interpolates Stevie Wonder’s song “Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer,” while the beat’s soulful piano chords are derived from Donny Hathaway’s track “A Song For You” and replayed by James Poyser.
