“Belinda Says” is a nostalgic ballad that pays homage in both lyric and sound (the same tempo and chord progression in the verses) to Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven is a Place on Earth”.

The 1987 hit from the former Go-Go has seen some love in the past few years, seeing its use in TV shows like Black Mirror for the episode “San Junipero” and The Handmaid’s Tale as the protagonist June kneels for hours in a hospital room and hyperfixates on the IV drip.

All three uses of the song call on its nostalgic comfort. The lyrics promise that the peace that people seek in the afterlife can be created in life through loving someone. Rankin references this, but instead comments that if love goes wrong, Hell can be simulated on the mortal plane as well.
