A Couple of Swells

A Couple of Swells

Irving Berlin

This song was written for Fred Astaire and Judy Garland in the 1948 musical film Easter Parade. The movie was supposed to star Gene Kelly, but he had to drop out after breaking his ankle playing touch football. Kelly later said that he always felt regret whenever he saw the dance number that resulted from this song, which has Astaire and Garland dressed like hobos as they mock the pretensions of the upper class.
