The third track on Maddie & Tae’s E.P. Through the Madness: Vol. 2, “Drinking to Remember” inverts the format of the popular country-breakup-and-ensuing-impairment-songs, such as the duo’s previous hit, “Bathroom Floor”. In its title alone, “Drinking to Remember” changes its speaker’s intent in having a drink. Where the standard would see its speaker seeking intoxication in hopes of forgetting an ex, this speaker is in the final stages of “letting go” of a former relationship. Since she’s no longer heartbroken, a shot of her ex’s favorite whiskey allows her to bear witness to their relationship wistfully and lovingly, and to finally move on.
