The fourth release in SM STATION’s 2022 project NCT LAB, “Forever Only” is the solo debut of NCT’s main vocalist JAEHYUN. The chill R&B song encompasses a sense of loneliness and emptiness that is slowly built throughout the track, with emotional vocals and groovy guitar riffs.

During the behind video of “Forever Only,” in which JAEHYUN talked about the songwriting process, he mentioned the main theme of the song were the memories and emotions that remain after a relationship comes to an end. Exploring the cold feelings of a heartbreak, “Forever Only” focuses on the desire of wanting to stay with an individual long after they’ve left.
