Butterfly Effect

Butterfly Effect

Muni Long

The Butterfly Effect is a theory that essentially emphasises how one small action can have enormous, life-altering consequences.

Muni uses this idea as she contemplates whether she may have met the love of her life if the course of her day had changed, even slightly, such as turning down this imagined person’s street. This track sees Long move from reflecting on past and current relationships, as she does throughout Public Displays of Affection: The Album, to pondering potential ones that are yet to begin. The chorus focuses on this sense of longing, praying that everything falls into place at the right time for this love to appear finally.

However, at the same time, she suggests that one can find peace in the fact that their love can never end because the story never began. There may be a child-like excitement in holding onto this moment, waiting for it to come. Or, perhaps, she is grateful that she can’t be hurt again by a failed relationship, as it cannot affect her if it never comes to fruition.
