“Inertia” is the fifth track on AJR’s fifth studio album, The Maybe Man. On November 12, 2022, AJR published the first TMM announcement video with the chorus of Inertia as the background music. On September 11, 2023, the band confirmed Inertia to be on the album when they released the official tracklist for The Maybe Man.

During the brothers' interview with Zach Sang, they reveal the story behind this song and how it came to be.

We have a really good friend who works at a bank, and every time I see him, he just tells me how much he hates his job. And he just really wants to quit, and he goes, “There’s people that I work with that have been here for, like, 20 years, and wanted to quit 20 years ago and they never did.” And then he went, “But, you know, inertia.” (imitates the melody) […] And Ryan was like, that’s 100% a song concept, that is so relatable.
