Nessa Barrett

“american jesus” reveals a more joyful side to Barrett, as it dives into desire and devotion with a partner. Throughout the track, Barrett sings about the fantasy of being saved by someone, while giving references to the Bible, Jesus and American symbols. In a press release reported via Warner Records in April 2023, Barrett expanded on the song’s meaning, saying:

[It’s] about the fantasy of someone who is your savior, your cowboy in a crown. Everyone dreams about a love that’s heavenly, and I know everyone will be able to relate to this.

Prior to it’s release, the song was performed live on the young forever tour. It was likely recorded or written on December 20, 2022, due to a Tweet posted by Barrett on that date. In another Tweet posted on January 26, 2023, Barrett announced two new song titles, one of them being “american jesus”, and confirmed that it would be a single. The demo version of the single was released on May 19, 2023.
