Aberinkula

Aberinkula

The Mars Volta

An Aberinkula is a type of “non-sacred” Batá drum(pictured below) used in parts of Nigeria and Cuba for the sake of being integrated into popular music in those countries, compared to the traditional ones that are heavily related to the teachings and religious activities of The Yoruba.

The term can also be translated to “Non-Believer” in some languages. Fitting, since it seems as though there’s a certain refrain relating to it throughout the track’s lyrics and the fact that the specific drum is played for non-religious purposes.
