You Gots to Chill

EPMD

The second single from EPMD’s 1988 album Strictly Business, “You Gots to Chill” is more than just a song; it’s a command: sucker MC’s, take a chill pill and sit back, because like Borat’s brother Bilo, you’ll never get this.

Rapping over the dulcet tones of Zapp’s oft-sampled 1980 funk standard “More Bounce to the Ounce,” the song is an adamant declaration of EPMD’s total dominance. Erick and Parrish are so much better at music, ladykilling, and moneymaking than the next comer, it would be foolish to even think about competing. Confident sentiments for a group just putting out its debut album, but the song did reach #22 on the U.S. R&B charts, and Strictly Business went gold in a matter of months.

At any rate, the song is a classic: the thumping, rolling bass; the cuts tighter than a hipster’s jeans; the irresistibly authoritative directive to relax – it’s a hot track indeed, but if you start to overheat, take EPMD’s advice and just chill.
