afro futurism

Noname

Afro futurism is the philosophy that revolves around the aesthetic of African-American/Black culture being intertwined with sci-fi, history and fantasy. The motive of this philosophy is to interconnect African-americans to their lost, forgotten history. It expresses black liberation through creative works such as this track.

It touches on the idea of fictitious beings such as a zombie and mention of universal objects; orbits, comets and the sun itself. These ideas are discusses in the background of a strong R&B beat and melodic piano with a play of voices in the background. There’s an ease provided by the track due to homely and informal scenery which warms the atmosphere. Noname calling the sun hers ties perfectly with the idea of a ‘Sundial, which keeps track of time through sun rays. This underlying theme within the album is essentially portrays Noname as a revolutionary, in search for change. This change is metaphorically described as the sun. Sun could be an indirect mention of Sun Ra who was a good representation of Afro futurism due to the fact that his name was inspired by the Egyptian mythological god, Ra the Sun god.

This shows how there is still a itching need to express black liberation, even though they are stereotypical elements that are made mention of. This doesn’t go against the message that is drawn across which is to appreciate black creativity and the nature of black lives.
