Divine Step (Conspectu Mortis)

Divine Step (Conspectu Mortis)

Coroner

“Divine Step (Conspectu Mortis)” is the opening track off Coroner’s Mental Vortex album. The lyrics talk about death – a recurring theme of the swiss band’s discography – more specifically death in a hospital, as in the intro dialogue taken from the 1985 american movie Re-Animator.

Death here is discussed just like the title suggests: as a “divine step”, in a transcendental and spiritual way, in which the speaker wonders about what he will find on the other side. Also in the title, between parenthesis, “conspectu mortis” are the latin words for “at the sight of death”.

The main riff showcases Coroner’s technical thrash proficiency with a 5/4 time signature, that sounds actually very natural.
