Desafinado

Gal Costa

Desafinado is the last song off Gal Costa’s controversial album, India. The album was released in 1973 and had a provocative cover which was censored by the military regime in Brazil. It features Costa wearing Indigenous skin and featured her in a thong while the back cover displayed her breasts, offending the “good mannerisms” of Brazilian society. This song is Gal Costa’s cover of Tom Jobim’s bossa nova standard Desafinado. Bossa nova is the genre of music that came after Samba cancao and was followed by Tropicalismo. Costa not only paid tribute to Brazils musical heritage but she also showed that a former Tropicalista could do more than shock and astound the audience, she could also seduce them. Thereby, paving the way for other artists in the post-Tropicalismo era. This element only increased Gal Costa’s prominence as one of the greatest Brazilian musicians of the past century.
