Footsteps is the third song in a trilogy called Mamasan.

The Mamasan Trilogy consists of “Alive", “Once", and “Footsteps". In that order. Together they tell the tale of incest, murder, and finally, the remorse of a man on death row about to take a walk down the green mile.

The admission in the opening line and subsequent execution suggest that the lyrics are meant to be read as a police confession.
