“One, Two Step” was the second single from Ciara, who was initially touted as the “princess of Crunk&B.” The song was produced by and co-written with Jazze Pha, the collaborator of choice for the bulk of her debut album Goodies.

The song was a hit reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It features a cameo rap verse from Missy Elliott. Elliott would return the favor the following year by having Ciara do a rap verse on “Lose Control” – which would earn Ciara her first ever Grammy win.

The sound of “One, Two Step” has a heavy electro dance vibe which drew a good deal of its inspiration from early 80s hip-hop songs like Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock.” In keeping with that theme, Missy Elliott’s rap verse almost entirely follows the cadence of a similar verse from Teena Marie’s “Square Biz.”
