“Defiance” is the ninth track on The Young Veins‘ debut album, Take a Vacation!, sung by Ryan Ross.

Defiance, by definition, means “open resistance” or “bold disobedience.” Lyrically, this is probably one of the most introspective songs on the record, on Ryan’s part — it essentially talks about aspects of the writer’s personality and moments in his life that he does ‘in defiance’, going against what he was told as a kid, and what is expected of him.

There may, however, be another inspiration for the song. Three years after this song was released, Jon Walker, guitarist for the band, posted a picture seemingly taken on the 20th of October 2008.
The picture shows Jon and Ryan standing with the members of their former band, Panic! at the Disco, on a bridge named Defiance.

Someone inquired as to whether the photo had anything to do with the song, and though the tweet has since been deleted, Jon’s answer remains.
